Profile of a Graduate: Communication

A recent 2018 Job Outlook Survey found that only 41% of employers ranked
current students as proficient in oral/written communications which is one reason
why the HSSD believes communication is a critical element in the success of our
students regardless of post high school graduation plans. Communication is an
important component of our District Profile of a Graduate.

HSSD GRADUATE PROFILE

From the School Board
November 2019

HSSD GRADUATE PROFILE

The Howard-Suamico School District (HSSD) vision is an authentic, innovative, connected, and inspired experience for an ever-changing future.  In order to achieve this vision for our students, HSSD Graduate Profile has been developed to include seven characteristics that are at the center of learning in our schools and community.  Graduate Profile characteristics are critical skills for engaged citizenship, successful career paths, and meaningful community involvement.  Graduate Profile characteristics include self-starter, critical thinker, collaborator, communicator, adaptable, responsible, and solutionist. Rigorous academic standards present daily opportunities for students to demonstrate profile characteristics in our classrooms. Foundational academic skills learned and measured alongside the graduate profile characteristics accentuate a whole-student experience in HSSD.

Throughout the year, the Board of Education monitors student performance in HSSD Graduate Profile seven characteristics. At the October 21 Board meeting, we talked with teachers from multiple grade levels and observed mathematics lessons in action with students developing critical thinker and solutionist skills.  At the November 18 Board meeting, we met with teachers and literacy coaches and observed literacy lessons in action with students growing as communicators.

To provide rich learning opportunities, instructional practices are now emphasizing performance tasks so that students can grow and learn these seven characteristics.  Seeing our students intentionally developing HSSD Graduate Profile characteristics is exciting and rewarding because we know they are being prepared to thrive in our complex and rapidly changing world.  For more information about the Howard-Suamico School District, Board of Education, please visit our website at www.hssdschools.org, or for additional information regarding this article, contact school board member Rachelle Paulsen at rachpaul@hssdschools.org

2019-2020 Howard-Suamico School District Budget

During our annual meeting last month, community members received a detailed review of the school district’s 2019-2020 budget and voted to adopt it as presented. During the meeting on October 21, the Board of Education approved a total tax levy of $28,248,522, which supports a district budget of $87,410,185 – a decrease of 2.17% as compared to the previous year.

This levy will result in the school’s portion of our property taxes remaining stable at $9.19; significantly below the state’s average levy. This budget, just as in year’s past, establishes that we continue to value innovation, investing in our staff, driving academic performance for every student.

Board members have engaged in continuous legislative advocacy efforts, specifically pertaining to the State’s biennium budget, which positively impacted the students of the Howard-Suamico School District.

The low revenue ceiling increase - a main focus of the Board’s advocacy efforts - especially for a low-spending district like ours, made a tangible impact. For the first time in over a decade, our District will see a net increase in our overall revenue limit. Our overall revenue limit has increased by just over $2,000,000. This is due to an adjustment to $9,700 per pupil for the lowest spending districts across the State coupled with our District’s first increase in resident students in over 5 years.
For more information about the Howard-Suamico School District budget please visit our website at www.hssdschools.org, or for additional information regarding this article, contact school board member Vanessa Moran at (920) 246-3999 or vanemora@hssdschools.org.

Budget Hearing and Annual Meeting

This year the Howard-Suamico Board of Education will hold its public Budget Hearing
and Annual Meeting on September 30, 6:00 p.m. in the District Office Community Training
Center, 2706 Lineville Road, Suamico. In addition, the Superintendent will present a State of
the District address.
We have been asked on occasion about the purpose of these meetings which are also
referred to as Meetings of the Electors. State Law requires school districts across Wisconsin to
hold a Budget Hearing and Annual Meeting each year. There are legal requirements
surrounding these events, but school officials have long recognized this event as an opportunity
for the community and the school district to connect, to communicate, and to reach greater
understanding. School administrators and board members provide focus on achievements,
needs and the future of the district. Community members are presented with information
about the operations of the school district, are able to ask questions, and will then vote on
various motions.
On behalf of the Howard-Suamico School District, the Board of Education invites
attendance and participation from district residents. Please consider joining us on Monday,
September 30. Copies of the budget book will be available in the School District Office, 2706
Lineville Road, Green Bay, beginning September 20, 2019, and will be available at the meeting
on September 30.

School District and School Board Summer Highlights

This summer our learning community was energized with opportunities for children of all ages and abilities as the District welcomed over 3,200 students enrolled in summer school classes.  However, students were not the only ones engaged in learning this summer. Below are a few highlights of District educator and School Board activities during the last three months.

  • Strategic Direction: Administration attended the School Administrator Institute for Transformational Leadership (SAIL).  This organization is designed to assist school and district leadership teams in creating a coherent and connected plan for transforming education at the local level within a complex environment, and in the process, instill confidence throughout the system for powerfully moving forward;
  • Professional Development:  Instructional staff members expanded their horizons through coursework and training by attending Professional Learning Communities (PLC) at Work Institute, June 24-26, Minneapolis, MN, with a focus on learning, building a collaborative culture, and results orientation – specific, practical, and inspiring strategies for transforming the district into a place where all students learn at high levels;
  • Innovation: A team of District leaders, principals, and teachers attended the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics Leadership Academy (NCSM) July 22-24 in Madison;
  • Continuous Improvement: Routine maintenance, repair, landscaping, and cleaning of the community’s eight school facilities, totaling more than 1-million square feet, keeps our sites operating safely, efficiently and effectively throughout the school year;
  • Compassion: The Howard-Suamico Education Foundation partnered with Green Bay Community Church, businesses, employees, and other civic organizations in providing over 400 economically disadvantaged students with backpacks and essential school supplies.  Also, 280 students from 10 different states were housed at Lineville Intermediate School for one week in partnership with Group Mission Work Camps and Trinity Lutheran Church. The students did area yard and home repair for dozens of homes owned by the elderly, disabled veterans and economically disadvantaged neighbors;
  • Leadership: Board of Education members attended the Wisconsin Association of School Board (WASB) 2019 Summer Leadership Institute in July.  The Board of Education also met to discuss and develop its own goals for the coming school year.

The District and Board seek to use frequent and varied methods of communication to inform our community.  Please let us know how we are doing and if there are other ways you would like us to consider.

From the School Board - Bay Port High School Commencement

From the School Board

June, 2019
Bay Port High School Commencement
Class Motto …………“Ending a decade together, because together is powerful.”
Sunday, June 2, 2019, the 55th class to graduate from Bay Port High School walked across the stage gathering their diplomas, a sunflower, countless handshakes, hugs, photos, and best wishes at the annual commencement ceremony.  The audience included family, friends, faculty, and staff members.

The class of 2019 includes:
  • 49 students graduating with a grade point average of 4.0 or higher
  • 104 National Honor Society members
  • 59 students who earned a place on the High Honors list for 7 semesters (3.75-4.0)
  • 69 students on the Honors list for 7 semesters (3.20-3.749)
  • 4 students graduating with the International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Many students who volunteered their time, energy and resources throughout our community
  • 93 students who earned Advanced Placement Scholar Awards
  • Numerous musicians, artists, athletes, technology-minded and academically gifted students who competed at the state level
  • 9 students who enlisted in the United States Military
  • 146 senior scholarships that were awarded to 79 different students totaling $1,996,518

Future plans for some of the 2019 Bay Port graduates include entering fields such as international relations, music, medicine, education, theater, psychology, law, biomedical science, environmental sciences, political science, physics, engineering, fire-fighting, cosmetology, and the armed forces, to name only a few.  These graduates started kindergarten in the fall of 2006 and have seen numerous changes in their neighborhoods, their schools, the community, and in the world. Adapting, learning and growing through these changes will serve them well in the future as one can only imagine the changes they will see in the next 13 years.

The achievements of this class combined with their plans for the future have opened up endless possibilities.  As these young adults leave Bay Port High School to begin the next stage of their lives, they take with them the hopes of past generations of graduates.  They will draw upon their experiences of the past 13 years, inside and outside of the classroom, to help navigate whatever path they choose. May our Bay Port graduates view the successes they have realized thus far as foundational to the successes of their future.  The Board of Education congratulates the Class of 2019 and wishes each and every one of them the best of luck in their future endeavors.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE TO THE BOARD
Please enjoy this article from outgoing Student Rep to the Board – Abbi Bender!

In a culture constantly motivated by change and innovation, the Howard-Suamico School District and Board of Education prove time and time again that they are unafraid of the fast-paced progress headed for the education system. With the help of a hardworking administrative team, the passionate and dedicated school board members take on big undertakings in adapting our district to better fit the needs of the 21st Century in stride.

                For thirteen years, the Howard Suamico Board of Education has included the vital position of a non-voting student representative at each biweekly board meeting to be a direct link from the student body to board members. During the 2018/19 school year, I, Abbi Bender, was honored with the opportunity to fill this position. My term comes to an end on May 20, 2019 and I am incredibly proud to have been a part of such an innovative and passionate board that strives to better the education of all students, and ultimately improve the community as a whole.

                The end of my term on the school board coincides with a lot of ends in my life. In a couple of short weeks, I will become a graduate from the Howard Suamico School District and end my time as a high school student. To me, it is easy to reflect on the major changes I have seen throughout my education; I have vivid memories of giving presentations on overhead projectors in kindergarten, the implementation of the first SMART Boards in my second grade class, and where classroom technologies are now, giving my peers and I the opportunity to create and learn from dynamic and interactive presentations on two screens and personal devices.

It is harder, however, to recognize some of the smaller changes developing overtime through dedicated conversations and meticulous planning. In November, the Board, as well as district administrators, participated in a book study on Ted Dintersmith’s What Schools Could Be. This study prompted challenging conversations on the innovation needed to improve public education and the direction of the district. By listening to and participating in this dialogue, I was able to observe the dedication and fearlessness the Howard-Suamico School District has when it comes to bringing positive change to their schools and community. I left those board meetings exhilarated by the discussions and unable to wait to share all the exciting topics (often prompting me to call my mom on my way home because a seven minute drive was too long of a wait).

Following these energizing meetings, I fulfilled my responsibility as the student representative by communicating with my peers about the discussions that took place at the board table. Despite technological advancements, classroom education has, for the most part, remained stagnant throughout the lifetimes of my peers and myself. While reporting out on ideas about “The Profile of a Graduate” and “Individualized Learning,” my peers became excited about the changes that will take place in their education throughout the coming years.

To my peers, and to myself, nothing is more energizing than knowing that positive change is coming, and the efforts are being led by a team of dedicated board members and district administrators who are clear about their intentions to influence our educational path in a way that will better prepare us for our ever-changing futures.

For more information about our governance policies or our school district, please visit our website at www.hssdschools.org  For additional information regarding this article, contact Student Representative to the Board, Abbi Bender, at bendabbi@hssdschools.org or School Board member, Garry Sievert at garrsiev@hssdschools.org

From the School Board April, 2019

New Board of Education Members

On April 2, 2019, Scott Jandrin and Jason Potts became the newest elected members of the Howard Suamico Board of Education.

The decision to run for a seat on the Board of Education reflects a commitment to public service and dedication to democracy. A choice to serve in this manner is particularly significant because locally elected officials are closer to the individuals they represent than other policymakers.  Public schools carry out one of society’s most important tasks - educating students to become productive, responsible, civic-minded adults who prosper and serve.

As a school board member, one must balance the interests and values of children, parents, teachers, administrators, taxpayers, business leaders, and retirees among others in our school district.  Performed with sincerity and thought, service on a school board is a vital public service.

The mission of the Howard-Suamico School District Board of Education is “to enact policies and allocate resources to develop all students’ full academic potential and to promote their social and emotional growth.”  Therefore, it is desirable that our board of education consists of members who:

    Are visionary and able to create alternate futures
    Are conceptual thinkers
    Grasp the big picture
    Are connected to District ownership
    Demonstrate moral courage
    Can work within a group setting
    Accept and use authority
    Can allow others to lead

The HSSD Board of Education appreciates outgoing school board members, Mark Ashley and Maria Lara’s dedicated service.   Our school district is truly a better place because of their investment of time and talents.
